Islam in Europe

In a time when right-wing populist movements all across Europe have painted a hostile picture of Islam, what does Islam in Europe really look like? How do Muslims see themselves and their communities, and how do their non-Muslim neighbours see them?

Details

Entry deadline (Attention: the deadline has been extended!)

Entries can be submitted until 15 September 2017.

Exhibition

From November 2017 to spring 2018, a selection of 50 pictures from the photo series submitted will be showcased in the Berlin branch of the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany. The exhibition will then move on to several German cities. Follow-up showcases throughout Europe are planned as well.

Award Ceremony

The winners will be revealed 15 November, as the exhibition opens in Berlin. The travel and accommodation costs of the photographers of the winning series will be covered.

Procedure

Entries can be submitted until 15 September 2017 in two categories: professional and amateur photographers. Online voting starts on 18 September and ends on 3 October 2017. Users can vote on all series in both the professional and the amateur categories on zenith.me.

Users can rate both the idea and the look of a photo series on a scale from 0 to 100. The sum of the two scores equals the total rating for a photo series. Entries will be ranked according to the total rating and the number of votes.
The winning series emerging from online voting will be given the Popular Choice Award, with a prize of 500 euros. This winner will remain eligible for jury consideration in the professional or amateur category.

The top 25 photo series (for each category) emerging from online voting will be presented to the jury. 25 additional photo series (for each category) given to the jury will be selected by the zenith Magazine photography department. The jury will choose both winning series from among these photo series.

Participation and Prizes

The zenith Photo Award wants to challenge stereotypes and inspire creative approaches on the topic of Islam in Europe – be it showcasing Muslims’ everyday lives, documenting Muslim influences on culture or architecture, or even providing abstract representations of Muslim identity in Europe. The zenith Photo Award reaches out to professional and amateur photographers alike. Besides the award for professional photographers (3,000 euros) and amateurs (1,500 euros) to be determined by a jury, the zenith Photo Award also features a user-driven popular choice award (500 euros).

About the competition

The zenith Photo Award is a photo competition initiated by German zenith Magazine in 2011 and supported and co-funded by Stiftung Mercator, a German philanthropic foundation. The CANDID Foundation is an independent non-profit institute based in Berlin that assumed editorial responsibility for zenith Magazine in 2015 and implements projects that foster intercultural understanding. The first three editions of the zenith Photo Award were held in German and aimed to show the perspectives of Muslims in Germany on their communities, as well as the views of non-Muslims on their Muslim neighbours. Major German and international media covered the competition and featured the winning photographers. The award ceremony for the third edition of the zenith Photo Award in March 2015 was hosted by TV talk show host Sandra Maischberger. The fourth edition of the competition is widening the scope, encouraging participants to take part in the debate on Islam in Europe through their entries.
