Living in the Middle of Cultural Confluence

28-years-old Masyitah was born in Aceh, Indonesia. When the region she was living in was declared a military operations area by the Indonesian army (1991-1997) she had to leave her family and went on to study in Java. In 2007, she came to Göttingen, Germany, to pursue her studies. As a Muslim girl, she was supposed to adapt to customs and culture in Germany. Like most German students, she had to take a job in order to finance her studies. In short, she was supposed to live her life just as German students did while at the same time she ought to keep her Muslim identity.
